Workshops for Cross-cultural Psychology

The workshops for cross-cultural psychology were held at the Department of Education’s building, Nagoya University on July 30 (Sat.), organized by 国際比較文化心理学研究会 (sponsored by the IACCP (International Association for Cross-cultural psychology)).

There were two workshops: “Teaching cross-cultural psychology” (WS1) and “Cultural-neuroscience” (WS2). More than 100 researchers participated in the WSs and actively discussed each other.

WS1: 文化心理学を教える / Teaching Cross-cultural Psychology: Course Design and Learning Activities

OrganizersBeth Morling (University of Delaware, USA) & Benjamin Cheung (University of British Columbia, Canada)

The WS1 was for researchers and teachers who are working for higher educations. In the first half, 7 techniques, which can lead students’ interests in and understandings for cross-cultural psychology, were introduced. In the latter half, theoretical grounds and the newest knowledge of effective teaching styles in higher educations were explained. The experiencing workshop made participants forget about time, and the discussion got really lively.

WS2: 文化神経科学 / Cultural-neuroscience: Accomplishment So Far and Future Directions

Organizer: Shinobu Kitayama (University of Michigan, USA)

Speakers:

There is an emerging approach to human behavior and culture in cultural psychology: Cultural neuroscience. The aim of this approach is to examine dynamic reciprocal processes between social/cultural evolution and gene evolution. In workshop 2, four leading cultural neuroscientists provided talks on their cutting-edge researches. The effectiveness of Cultural neuroscience approach was discussed eagerly.
